A Sensory Healthy Life

sensory

So, what is a sensory-healthy life?

Is it one where your house is filled with the smell of gorgeous flowers? (olfactory processing)

Is it one where you see beautiful items everywhere you turn? (visual processing)

Is it one where you are active and on the go from morning to night, collapsing happily at the end of the day? (vestibular and proprioceptive processing)

Is it one where you snuggle up with a warm cuppa in a soft blanket? (tactile processing)

It may be! It may not be!

It all depends on you. Not in a selfish, self-indulgent, or self-centred way—but because your sensory needs are as unique as you are. A sensory-healthy life is about meeting individual needs in a tailored and personalised way. It’s about understanding your own unique needs in a way that only you can. No one else knows you as well as you do.

It’s about finding the things you enjoy—the things that make you feel relaxed, the things that help you stay calm when life gets tough, the things that help you stay organised, focused, and effective in your tasks, and the things that help you feel coordinated and confident.

And what happens if those needs aren’t met?

Well, anxiety can go through the roof. Meltdowns, irritability, stubbornness, frustration, and exhaustion become commonplace. Clumsiness, picky eating, poor stamina, poor sleep, and difficulty with everyday tasks and life skills can also emerge—making life feel tough!

Not a life most of us would choose!

Only you will know your best sensory-healthy life.

Only you will know how much, how regularly, how intensely, and how long you want certain sights, sounds, smells, touches, tastes, and movement experiences in your life.

Only you will know how intense you want the smell of those flowers, how much visual clutter you can handle, or how much activity you can manage in a day. You may love hours of walking up hills, or maybe a 30-minute walk to the shops is best for you.

Whatever works for you!

I help the people I work with become aware of the sensory experiences filling every moment of every day. Each minute—each hour—what is their brain coping with, and what sensory input is being fed to their brain from both inside the body and the world around them?

Only when we truly understand our sensory needs can we live in our best sensory health. I'll do all that I can to help you thrive in yours!

Do get in touch if you would appreciate someone coming alongside you in this.
